To coincide with the visit of Stephen Hawking to Hong Kong on 12 Jun, RNN has chosen to touch a bit of science for this month's topic.
Bonnie, together with Vivian (our honarable co-ordinator) welcomed Iris and Kitty. Prior to the beginning, Bonnie requested everybody to sit well (in fact, to sit firmly). Kitty followed the best while Iris showed us her puzzling face.
"Well, if all of you are ready, let's begin" Bonnie said.
"Be careful and hold tight! the Earth is rotating!"
Our lovely guests said, "I can feel my heart is beating"; "I can feel the air is moving"....Yet, we all recognized that we did not really see the movement of our body due to the Earth rotation.
Bonnie continued to asked, "How do you aware the Earth is indeed rotating depsite the knowledge taught in school?"
Iris soon able to response, "We can see the sun rise and sun set."
We further explored the rotating direction of the Earth is from West to East.
Bonnie cited that we all know about this as a knowledge or as an experience with nature. Yet, we may not be aware of its importance to us. "Let's move a bit forward."
Bonnie asked, "if one day, the Earth does not rotate, what will happen?"
All angels soon recognized that one side of the Earth will remain light forever while the other side will be in the darkness. It's intersting that I continued to ask them which side they would like to live in. One soon said, "the bright side." while the other two like to live in between the dark and bright sides. Smart girls right?!
Soon, one of them recognized she may died if the Earth really does not rotate. Bonnie likes their assumptions and encouraged them to talk more, "Well, then what would happen?"
"Trees will die."
"Water will be freezed to ice."
"Fast evaporation at the bright side will make land to become desert."
"No trees, no oxygen!"
"People in the darkness may cause depression."
"When to sleep?"
"If trees die, the food supply will be break down."
.....................................more
Bonnie appreciated their active and hearty reponses. Well, how did this exercise change you feeling with the Earth?"
"We have to protect the Earth."
"Environmental protection consciousness should be raised."
"I hate those polyform packaging which will contaminate the earth."
"Japan has gabbage recycling far earlier than Hong Kong. Hong Kong is really behind."
"We should use less polybag."
"May be due to Chinese are a bit short sighted in the environmental issue - "Take care thy home first " culture is a crucial obstacle."
"My attitude towards environmental protection will affect my children's perception."
"Take a container with you when dinning out to bring back the remaining food. Dont use restuarant's polyfoam box."
"Encourage our children to stop using one-time disposal items."
..........................more
I really feel grateful to these ladies' caring heart toward the Earth. "Well, upon a round of raising awareness exercise, I think all of you will have your unique way to preserve the Earth and keep it beautiful for our future generations."
